Phone Systems, Connectivity & Wi-Fi
Keep people talking, keep data flowing, keep business running
Connectivity and communications sit underneath almost everything your business does. When people can’t make calls, access systems, or collaborate reliably, productivity drops immediately.
At Deane Computer Solutions, we design phone systems, connectivity and Wi-Fi that support how modern businesses actually work. Not just today, but as services, locations and working patterns change.
Phone Systems:
Why IP Is Now the Default
Traditional telephony isn’t disappearing because of fashion. It’s disappearing
because the underlying networks are being retired.
The UK’s legacy PSTN and ISDN infrastructure is being withdrawn, with full switch-
off planned by 2027. This isn’t a legal requirement imposed on businesses, but a change in how telecom providers deliver services.
In practical terms:
- Analogue and ISDN lines will no longer be supported
- Existing services will need to migrate to IP-based alternatives
- Organisations that delay will eventually be forced to move, often under pressure
So while IP telephony isn’t “mandated by law”, staying on legacy systems is no longer a viable long-term option. For most organisations, the decision is no longer if they move to IP calling, but how to do it properly.
Modern IP Telephony:
Built for How People Work
IP phone systems are now the norm because they align with modern working patterns.
They allow:
- Calls on desk phones, laptops and mobiles using one identity
- Seamless support for remote and hybrid teams
- Integration with collaboration and productivity platforms
- Easier scaling without major infrastructure changes
On-site PBX still has a place in specific scenarios, but for the majority of businesses, IP-based and cloud telephony delivers greater flexibility and long-term value.
Platforms We Support
(and Prefer)
We support a range of phone platforms and will always recommend the right solution for the business. In practice, our preference is:
- Microsoft Teams-based telephony, where Microsoft 365 is already central
- Natterbox for enterprise-grade hosted voice
- 3CX where flexibility and customisation are required
Teams calling works particularly well because:
- Voice is tied directly to identity
- Security and access policies already apply
- Users don’t need to learn another tool
- Administration is simpler and more consistent
Voice becomes part of the productivity platform, not a standalone system.
Connectivity:
Speed Is Only Part
of the Story
Broadband and full-fibre connections offer excellent value for money and impressive headline speeds. With full fibre, performance can be genuinely excellent. The challenge is not speed, but consistency and response:
- Broadband has variable performance
- Fault response times can be slow
- Upload speeds and latency aren’t guaranteed
- Contention can impact critical services
For businesses that rely heavily on cloud services, VoIP and collaboration tools, leased lines remain the benchmark for predictable performance, backed by SLAs and defined support.
We don’t default everything to leased lines. We design connectivity based on business dependency and risk.
Resilience:
Because Links Do Fail
Outages are inevitable. Downtime doesn’t have to be. Resilient connectivity considers:
- A primary connection
- A secondary path using a different technology or provider
- Automatic failover
- Monitoring and alerting
Increasingly, this includes mobile data and satellite connectivity.
Powerful, Flexible, Used Sensibly
Starlink has changed what’s possible, particularly for:
- Remote or hard-to-serve locations
- Sites with limited fixed-line options
- Rapid deployment scenarios
It can also deliver speeds higher than some traditional broadband services. However:
- Ongoing costs can be higher
- Data policies and fair-use limits apply
- It isn’t always the best primary link for every business
We commonly deploy Starlink as:
- A standby connection, paused until required
- A secondary resilience link
- A primary connection only where it genuinely makes sense
Used correctly, it provides excellent insurance against outages.
Wi-Fi: Your Primary Network in Practice
For most users, Wi-Fi is the network.
We design Wi-Fi environments that consider:
- Coverage and capacity, not just signal
- Secure separation between business and guest traffic
- Performance for voice and video
- Central management and visibility
Guest Wi-Fi is treated as a security boundary, not an afterthought.
Where appropriate, it can also be used as a business tool, supporting visitor access, marketing capture or analytics.
While we work with most vendors, our default wireless stack is Ubiquiti UniFi, chosen for flexibility, visibility and scalability.
Why Partner With
Deane Computer Solutions
We don’t just provide circuits, phones or access points.
We:
- Design communications around productivity
- Build resilience into connectivity
- Integrate voice, data and security
- Monitor and support what we deploy
- Take ownership when things go wrong
Connectivity and communications are too important to treat as commodities.
Next Steps
If your current setup:
- Still relies on legacy phone lines
- “Mostly works” until it doesn’t
- Lacks clear failover
- Holds back productivity
…it’s time for a proper review.
We can:
- Assess telephony readiness ahead of PSTN switch-off
- Review connectivity performance and resilience
- Design future-proof phone and Wi-Fi solutions
